- Real magic is a dream for most of us. After Michael loses his wife and his eyesight, he feels magic is a curse best to ignore. That is until his daughter uses a spell to save him from himself. This is a spell that heals the broken and it barks.  Beneath the summer night sky, a little girl rocked back and forth in her chair in the middle of her backyard. She swung her bare feet impatiently, kicking free the sweat from her hot skin. She had another bad day at school and really needed a magical night to make her feel better. She heard her mother hang up the phone from somewhere behind the screen window of the kitchen. “Hurry, mom, it’s dark enough now!” she said, staring up at the stars. She heard the screen door fling open and then the rustling of tiny feet running through the grass. She turned and saw her stuffed bear and stuffed elephant rushing toward her like puppies with cute smiles sewn on their faces. Her mother was slowly walking behind them. She ignored the toys as they tried to jump onto her lap to cuddle, she could not look away from the worried look on her mother’s face. “Mommy?” she asked. Her mother smiled, but the tears in her eyes frightened her. “Mommy, what’s wrong?” “Nothing, Rebecca,” she said, taking her daughter into her lap. Rebecca gazed up at her mother, who was staring at the stuffed bear below her feet as it hugged the stuffed elephant.“I can use a hug like that right now,” her mother said. Rebecca embraced her mother. “Is this good, mommy?” “Yes, honey,” she said. “Who were you talking to?” Rebecca asked. “Doctor Henson,” she said. “Oh.”  Rebecca?” “Yes?”  “Promise me that you will always look after your father.”Rebecca’s head snapped up as she looked into her mother’s eyes. “Why? Where are you going, mommy?” Her mother brought a finger to her own lips. “It’s a secret, but I’ll tell you when your father comes home from work.” “Is it a magical place?” she asked. “Can I go?” Tears fell from her mother’s eyes. She touched Rebecca’s face. “One day, honey.” “What?” Rebecca whispered. She stared down at her mother’s hands as they held her close. They were the same hands that gave her toys life. That’s why what she was hearing was so hard to understand. “Rebecca, I’m-” “No,” she said. “Honey,” her mother said. “But, but you know magic!” she said…..
