Here's my perspective reading this book. I'm a four year college graduate with an IT degree. I did programming back in college on a small scale, had a couple of minor games in my past, one JavaScript and one Java. Very minor stuff. I've been an avid gamer for decades going back to the days of the Commodore 64. I have no interest in working in the industry but am curious about the inner workings. That said...
As games become more and more complex, longer, and incorporate more features, sadly the days of a person putting out anything but a web/phone game on their own seem behind us. I'm saddened by this, since it means fewer titles being released by fewer and fewer big houses, but at the same time you do see a distinct increase in the quality of product produced. For better or worse, the new skill set of a person trying to put out a game has moved on from just having a great idea and skill in most/all of the areas needed to put one out, to being more of a team building manager who can keep the vision in focus as he/she builds a team of people to implement that vision.
To me this book is helpful in three distinct ways. First it answered a lot of my questions about how games come into being. I liked the interviews with people in the industry and how they go about their jobs. It was like reading a gigantic, in depth magazine article about the industry. It will probably take you less than a week to read. Some parts I read intently, other parts I skimmed because they were a little more detail than I wanted. It's very accessible as a general interest piece. This is exactly why I picked it, so I'm very happy with it for this reason alone.
Second it helps you if you're in the industry by giving you potential pitfalls. You'll hear about the biggest trouble areas that you need to look out for in your time line. It also tells you in detail what qualities are important for success for various positions. Beyond team building it talks about royalties, how to evaluate a development deal, and intellectual property rights, and how to handle development on multiple platforms simultaneously.
Not being in the industry, I cannot say for sure how correct the author is in his assertions or figures, only that what he's saying usually makes perfect sense. If I ever were to go into the gaming industry I would want a book like this in my toolkit. My only reservation is that overall things seem a little superficial at times. It probably doesn't matter to a professional because you already know a lot of the base stuff and want to read it quickly to get good ideas, but if you're starting from scratch you may need to add another book or two to your reading list. Look at it as an investment in your career.
The third and final way I view this is as a pretty good general guide to business for managers. Any company with more than a few customers is probably doing some work with a distributed workforce in one manor or another. My last job, we had a four person team located at three different sites within the US. The author is spot on in a lot of his assertions about how you need to balance things and make sure that you keep people motivated when you can't see them every day and also prevent us vs them mentality with the other sites. The additional concerns for non-US speakers are also very apt. The book could serve quite well as a management book.
