The idea for this book originated in the mid 1970s when modern architecture was accelerating into a crisis of self-evaluation and lack of confidence in the more transparent theories of modernism. With everything possible, everythingand anythingwas seemingly being realized. Certainly in the 1980s we saw sweeping changes in architectural attitudes as different as Bauhaus Modernism was from the Beaux Arts. While the vigor has been without question, often the results have raised many questions. The advent of Post Modernism, for example, can readily be attributed to the so-called failure of Modernism. But where has Post Modernism, for many architects another saga of failure, and the legacy of earlier Modernism left us? Clearly with a need to again reestablish valid basic questions rather than dwell too religiously upon our more ephemeral conclusions.
One thought, however, seems apparent and reasonable: The present dilemma of modern architecture is the failure to develop a cohesive body of theory or set of disciplining criteria within which parameters of form derivation can evolve. The Gothic period had a notion of structure that dealt with it not only as a support system but with structure as essence, as the container of all aspects of a building even to the idea of light penetration both permitted by the methodology of structure while in turn deriving its own fundamental presence from this very dialogue with light. During the Renaissance more variable, hierarchical, and connective ideas of space by intention led to more sequential ideas of space and generic form varying the overall organization.
